Description

Our presentation traces diffusion patterns and dynamics of digital economy catchwords such as Social Media, Web 2.0, AI, IoT or Cloud computing, and their fast-paced dissolution to ephemerality through hype cycles. Specific words and concepts catch their audience, readers, regulators, investors and customers differently in different times. They provide useful heuristics. Future oriented fictive scripts and catchwords legitimate decisions and coordinate various actors horizontally, vertically and temporally. Catchwords’ role as mapping, performing and constructing the future is approached on the basis various digital search sources. Patent records, media archives and social media sites are used as an empirical source material. We also consult popular, necessarily incomplete and subjective, accounts of the origin of new catchwords. The final goal is to re-schematize possible mechanisms behind hype cycles with concepts like amnesia, neophilia and memeplexes,
