The regional focus of the Tauno Tönning Foundation is oriented from the beginning of the charter to aid research and cultural influence in northern Finland. In recent years, the aid is targeted almost exclusively to the University of Oulu research activities conducted within the university, developments, especially the effectiveness of the foundation-supported fields of science.
Technical and economic research, but also the environment is the foundation primary target of aid. These areas also support abroad postgraduate studies or research activities abroad to be carried out.
The number of grants awarded by the Foundation was initially small, but it has grown as the Foundation's assets has increased. In the Foundation's first 20 years from 1972 to 1992, 490 scholarships were awarded, totaling 813 300 euros. In 1994 to 2004, 417 scholarships were granted to the applicants with a total value of EUR 1.5 million. The Foundation has awarded a total of 2003 scholarships, including 950 issued by applications of a value of 2 519 000 euros.
Grant awardees were granted about 60%, or 8.2 million, for researchers of the Faculty of Technology.
The total amount of the Scholarship awarded was 4 000 euros.
