Description

Sino-Finnish Summer School in Environmental Science (SFiSSES 2015)

The project of Sino-Finnish Summer School in Environmental Science was organized by 3 Finnish Universities (University of Helsinki, University of Jyvaskyla, and University of Eastern Finland) and 3 Chinese Universities (Nanjing University, Tongji University and Hong Kong University). Two teachers and two students per each university attended the school in the summers of 2014 and 2015.

In 2015, the Sino-Finnish Summer School in Environmental Science were organized in Shanghai Region. Two PhD students Kaisa Kerminen and Paula Kajankari participated in the course. Dr. Nan Hui and Prof. Martin Romantschuk had given lectures, organized students’ tasks, and guided experimental works. Our student Paula Kajankari and her study group won the Best Design prize in DNA sequencing section of the course.

SFiSSES offered broad based benefits and outcomes for both teachers and students keen to embark on international adventure. Increased pressure to communicate and relate to others develops an awareness of group dynamics and personal sensitivity towards others. International learning and knowledge propels students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives. The event was very useful for us to understand how the doctorial study was conducted in a foreign country. All participants obtained new knowledge, experiences and chances in communicating with foreign colleagues. The course gave every participant a platform for learning and teaching. The event surely increased our ability of arranging international course and research projects in our department.
