The Discipline of Economics is one of the largest disciplines at the Faculty of Social Sciences and the largest of its kind in Finland . The number of registered students is about 400. Each year some 80 new students are enrolled to study economics as their major subject. In addition, a large number of students from other disciplines and faculties study economics as their minor subject. The principal teaching language is Finnish, but practically all literature as well as some courses are also in English.

The research interests of the staff range widely over major areas of economics. The members of staff (almost 40 persons) are active participants in international conferences and seminars and their research articles appear frequently in the leading international economic journals.
