Our research focuses on the functioning of lake ecosystems, especially on food web interactions and nutrient cycling and their implications on lake restoration and management. Additionally, coastal environments are included in the studies. In the food web studies, many projects have been targeted on the effects of disturbances on predator-prey interactions and on the effects of top-down regulation. The studied disturbances have included for instance increasing water turbidity, water colour and turbulence. Studies on nutrient cycling have mostly been targeted on factors regulating the internal nutrient loading of lakes, including for instance sediment resuspension, bioturbation and oxygen conditions. Both pelagic and littoral zones have been included in the food web interaction studies as well as in nutrient cycling studies. The studies include field sampling, as well as experimental work in the field and in the laboratory. Many of the studies are connected to lake management and restoration projects and are planned to improve our knowledge on the effects and applicability of different restoration methods. The studied restoration methods include food web management (biomanipulation), artificial aeration and hypolimnetic withdrawal.
