Salem Lab  Head & Neck Oncobiome Group

The recent recognition of the human microbiome as a new emerging hallmark of cancer reflects the importance and immense potential of this rapidly evolving field of cancer research.

In our lab, we delve into the intricate mechanisms of head and neck carcinogenesis, focusing on the dynamic interplay between tumor cells and oral microbiota—particularly, but not exclusively, bacteria. Our research extends beyond the basics, exploring how bacteria can influence cancer progression, from potentially premalignant changes to invasive lesions.

Our discoveries have already made significant waves, unveiling novel mechanisms behind cancer cell phenotypic plasticity, potentially driving lymphatic metastasis. With a network of effective international collaborations as well as the valuable support of our funders, we continue to push the boundaries of knowledge, including how certain bacterial vesicles and toxins can alter the course of cancer development.
