Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

All aspects of the collection, curation, and maintenance of ornithological specimens and animal genetic samples. Original independent research in the fields of biogeography, community ecology, molecular systematics, taxonomy, and phylogeography; planning and execution of ornithological field-based surveys.

SUPERVISION OF GRADUATE STUDENTS AND POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWS

2006 – present: 5 Postdocs / 20 PhD students / 29 Master Students.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

2006 – present: Participation or main responsibility for teaching the following graduate level courses: Biogeography, Conservation and management of the Amazonian fauna, Diversity and Evolution of Vertebrates, Evolution, Phylogenetic Systematics, and Phylogeography.

Education information

2002 - PhD  Zoology / Department of Biological Sciences, Louisiana State University, USA.

1997 - Master  Ecology / Institute of Biological Sciences, State University of Campinas UNICAMP, Brazil.

Research interests

My research interests lie in studying the evolutionary processes driving the diversification of modern birds, and include the fields of biogeography, historical ecology, landscape ecology and genetics, molecular systematics, phylogeography, and taxonomy. Currently, I am using genomic datasets to answer several key questions related to avian evolution both in the tropics and Eurasia, ranging from spatial and temporal patterns of genetic variation to the development of pre- and post-zygotic reproductive isolation barriers, and species delimitation.
