Research supervision and leadership experience

Officially appointed supervisor of 24 completed doctoral dissertations in Universities of Helsinki, Tampere and Lund between 1998 and 2020; in 18 of these, the sole or the primary supervisor.  Officially appointed supervisor of numerous master’s theses. 

Leader of research team on social interaction since 1993 (team has had members from the University of Tampere and the University of Helsinki).  

Primary supervisor of the post doc work of Sanna Vehviläinen (PhD 1999), Johanna Ruusuvuori (PhD   2000), Esa Lehtinen (PhD 2002), Liisa Voutilainen (PhD 2010), Melisa Stevanovic (PhD 2013) and Elina Weiste (PhD 2016).

 

Teaching merits

Pedagogical training for folk high schools and adult education centres 1994-1995.

Major involvement in course planning and implementation of courses in sociology (BA, MA and doctoral studies levels) at the Universities of Tampere and Helsinki since 1993

Developed the web based introductory course on CA; course has been in regular use at the University of Helsinki since 2009.

The Westermarck Award for the best article in the journal Sosiologia in 2009-2010, awarded in 2010. 

Jephcott European Visiting Professor 1994/95, The Royal Society of Medicine

“The teacher of the year” award by Tampere University students of sociology and social psychology in 1998.

The Westermarck Society MA thesis award for the best thesis in sociology in 1986.

In June 12, 2021 Google Scholar reported 10450 citations to my work, yielding h-index 48. In Scopus, there were 2548 citations and h-index 28. The most cited works were “Authority and accoutability: the delivery of diagnosis in primary health care” (1998) “Conversation analysis and the professional stocks of interactional knowledge“ (2003),  "Deontic authority in interaction" (with Melisa Stevanovic, 2012) and "Conversation analysis and psychotherapy" (edited book, 2008). 

University of Helsinki has recently recognized me as one of the most cited scholars at UH (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/top-research/highly-cited-researchers/highly-cited-researchers-philosophy-demography-sociology)

I consider my most important recent article “From narcissism to face work”, published in American Journal of Sociology in September 2015.
