Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

I teach in the Bachelor's Programme in Cultural Studies and the Master's Programme in Area and Cultural Studies, and my courses often deal with cultural theory and approaches to area and cultural studies as well as European contemporary cultures and cultural history. I lead research seminars on the bachelor's and master's level and also supervise doctoral students.

My research has focused on early modern European cultural history and historical and cultural theory. I have been especially interested in the culture and history of humour, gender and the body. I lead a research project on Northern Nightmares, ca. 1400-2020 (Academy of Finland) that recently published a book on the long history of bad dreams in Finland. This academic year (2025-26) I work for the research project Experiencing Agony. Pain and Embodiment in the British Atlantic World, 1600–1900 (PI Soile Ylivuori) and analyse everyday aches and pains of 17th-century English men and women.
