Curriculum vitae

BIO: Ari Helo (Ph.D) is a Senior University Lecturer in North American Studies at the University of Helsinki. Before his current position he has held lecturer positions in Intellectual History, American Studies, and Cultural Studies at three Finnish universities. He has also worked as an ASLA-Fulbright Fellow and the Academy of Finland Research Fellow at the University of Virginia and the University of Helsinki for several years. Helo's books and scholarly articles have been published in Britain, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia, and the United States. His award-winning book, Thomas Jefferson's Ethics and the Politics of Human Progress (Cambridge University Press, 2014), was characterized as "an exhilarating intellectual ride" in The American Historical Review. He has recently finished his third monograph, History, Politics, and the American Past: Essays on Methodology (forthcoming, Routledge, 2020).

Sept. 2017 onward: Senior University Lecturer in North American Studies at the University of Helsinki: Teaching duties include courses such as "Yhdysvaltain poliittinen historia 1865—" (American Political History, 1865 onward); "Yhdysvaltain perustamiskausi" (The Founding Era); Pohjois-Amerikan tutkimuksen perinteet ja menetelmät (North American Studies Traditions and Methodology); Supervising B.A., M.A., and Doctoral theses; etc.

2012-2017: Senior University Lecturer in History of Science and Ideas Program at the University of Oulu: Teaching included courses on American political and intellectual history and eighteenth-century moral thought as well as reading seminars in intellectual history. (Instruction given partly in English.) Courses included: "American Political History 1776-1865"; "American Political History 1865 onward"; "Aatehistorian klassikot seminaari" (Intellectual History Classics Seminar); "Skottilainen valistus" (The Scottish Enlightenment) with Professor Pietikäinen. Also held M.A. Thesis Seminar in Intellectual History for four academic years, 2012-15 and 2016-17.
