Eero Huovinen

Curriculum vitae

The Right Reverend Eero Huovinen, born in 1944, Bishop of Helsinki, Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland (ELCF). He was ordinated in 1970 in Turku. Episcopal consecration took place in 1991 in the Cathedral of Helsinki. Huovinen retired in September 2010

The Diocese of Helsinki, established 1959, is the second youngest among the nine dioceses of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. The diocese of the capital of Helsinki covers only 1 % of the country, but has one tenth of the population (0,55 million of 5 million).

Eero Huovinen has graduated from the University of Helsinki as follows: Master of Theology in 1970, Licentiate of Theology in 1976 and Doctor of Theology in 1978. He has served in various positions in the Faculty of Theology in 1970‑1991. Before the election to Episcopal ministry, he was the Professor of Dogmatics and the Dean of the Faculty. He was a member of the Board of the University of Helsinki 2009-2013.

The studies of Huovinen are concentrated on ecumenism, theology of Lutheran reformation, and Roman Catholic theology. He was a member of the drafting group of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification 1996–1997. Huovinen was the Co-chair of the Roman Catholic - Lutheran Dialogue Group for Sweden and Finland, in 2002-2009, and the Co-chair of the international Lutheran - Roman Catholic Commission on Unity, since 2008. The Chair of the Board of Trustees, Institute for Ecumenical Research, Strasbourg, he was in 1997-2003.

Among other responsibilities, he has been Moderator of the Doctrinal Commission of the ELCF General Synod, Member of the ELCF Church Council for International Relations, Member of the Council of the Lutheran World Federation and Vice-President of the LWF.

Huovinen’s spouse since 1968 is Anja Tuulikki Huovinen (b. 1948), MA, General Secretary of the Finnish Museum Association, Chairperson of the Board of the Network of European Museum Organisations. Their children are daughter Laura (b. 1981) and son Jaakko (b. 1984)
