Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

My main research interest lies in the empirical study of linguistic diversity, its distribution and development over time and its relationship with language ecology. I am especially interested in the crosslinguistic study of language complexity, in the typology of nominal classification systems, nominal number systems, evaluative morphology, language change and language contact. At the University of Helsinki I am working on a postdoctoral research project on patterns of diachronic change in the domain of grammatical gender (gender loss, emergence, reduction and expansion), and their relationship with grammatical complexity and language ecology.
