Research interests

Heidi Kovanen (PhD in Archaeology, University of Helsinki) is an archaeologist specialising in the architecture of death and burial. Her research focuses on developing new perspectives and sustainable discussion in the Humanities, with a special focus on questions of sex and gender.

Since 2013, Heidi has worked especially in the Mediterranean region - Greece and Italy - with a strong focus on Classical antiquity and the Middle Ages. Her doctoral dissertation (2023) is one of the few works that acknowledges nonbinary identities in the Iron Age Southern Levant, and the single most comprehensive work written about Iron Age human remains in this region.
