Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

My research area is biogeochemistry, especially carbon and nutrient dynamics in forest ecosystems in relation to environmental changes and forest management. Many of my projects have been large ecosystem-level studies. The projects have dealt with nutrient dynamics and management on forested mineral soils, pools and fluxes of carbon on mineral soils and peatlands, artificial groundwater recharge on forested eskers and remediation of heavy-metal polluted sites.

My present research projects concentrate on fine root dynamics, in particular the role of roots in carbon cycling, the long-term soil changes and ecosystem recovery from chemical and physical load as well as the sustainability of forest bioenergy.
