Description of research and teaching

My main areas of interest are early medieval intellectual history, manuscripts and the reception of patristic texts. I am currently working on a monograph on early medieval ideas about the soul, funded by the Research Council of Finland.

My first monograph, Dreams and Visions in the Early Middle Ages. The Reception and Use of Patristic Ideas, 400–900 (Cambridge, 2015) explores early medieval thought on dreams. I have also studied how early readers annotated some of Augustine of Hippo's major works. I have published several articles on early medieval history of ideas and on manuscript studies. I have also studied early book production in medieval Finland.

In early 2020 I spent three months visiting Huygens Instituut voor Nederlandse Geschiedenis in Amsterdam, and in 2019 I spent three months as a visiting fellow at the Institut für Mittelalterforschung of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2015 - 2018 I held the post of Academy of Finland Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki.  I spent the academic year 2014-2015 as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, fall 2015 as Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Kent, and spring 2016 at Institutum Romanum Finlandiae, Rome. In 2013 I worked on the textual histories of early chronicles the First Crusade for a project led by Dr Samu Niskanen. In 2013-2014 I co-ordinated the Codices Fennici -project for the Finnish Literature Society, mapping and cataloguing manuscripts produced and used in Finland before the seventeenth century.
