Curriculum vitae

John Sumelius is professor in Production Economics and Farm Management. His expertise includes Production Economics, Farm Management, Agricultural Policy, Rural Development, Agri-environmental issues, Econometrics, Food security and agricultural development in the developing world.

Research interests: a broad range of issues relating to both farm level and sector level agricultural development and rural development. More specific research interests covers the economic analysis of farms and rural industries, productivity, efficiency, rural livelihoods, food security, rural poverty, renewable resource policies, co-operatives and producer organizations.

Selection of engagements:

Doctoral thesis supervision: supervised 13 doctoral theses.

EU research programs: participated in eight EU framework, Horizon 2020, and horizon Europe research projects.

Coordinator of the LEAP-Agri project "Participatory Pathways to Sustainable Intensification. Innovation platforms to integrate leguminous crops and inoculants into small-scale agriculture and local value chains" (PASUSI) 2018-2022.

Assessor of the University education of Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Swedish Higher Education Authority 2012-2013.

Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry  since 2009.

Member of the Finnish Society of Science and Letters since 2003.

Board member of the Finnish Society of Science and Letters  2020-2022 and 2023-2025.

Board member of the foundation Finlandssvenska Jordfonden since 2021.

Description of teaching: teaching in the M Sc progamme AGERE (Agricultural, Environmental and Resource Economics) and B Sc programme YET four courses related to Agricultural Economics, Production Economics and Econometrics. Supervision of M Sc theses and doctoral theses.
