Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

Themes: igenous petrology; thermodynamics of layered intrusions; continental flood basalts and large igneous provinces; Earth's mantle and mantle plumes

Locations: Duluth igneous complex, ~2.44 Ga layered intrusions of Finnish Lapland, Karoo continental flood basalt province: Dronning Maud Land (Antarctica) and Mozambique (southern Africa)

Specialities: petrology (the origin of rocks); bedrock mapping; petrography; major and trace element geochemistry of rocks; mineral chemistry; isotope geochemistry (Sr, Nd, Pb, Os, He, O); geochemical modeling; structural geology

Equipment and methods: polarizing microscope; scanning electron microscope (SEM); electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS); thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS); Chemical treatment of Rb-Sr, Sm-Nd, U-Pb and Re-Os isotope systems from whole-rock samples

Research software and modeling: handling of geochemical data (MinPet and GCDKit); modeling parental melt composition (olivine-liquid equilibration, PRIMELT-software); modeling melt differentiation (PELE + MELTS-software, AFC, EC-AFC, MCS), 3D-modeling (MOVE), ArcGIS

Teaching: igneous petrology, geochemical modeling, bedrock mapping, Earth's mantle and large igneous provinces, structural geology, 3D-modeling, ArcGIS
