Description of research and teaching

As a historian, my research focuses on a broad interest in various aspects of society spanning from the early modern period to the 20th century. My research includes areas such as migration, minorities like the Karelians, legislation, commerce, maritime history, medical history, criminal history, and genealogy. Additionally, I have authored organizational histories and popular non-fiction books. I am also the editor-in-chief of two peer-reviewed genealogy journals.

In my teaching, I am committed to student-centered pedagogy and have developed diverse instructional methods that foster critical thinking and active learning. I have taught extensively in history: the University of Helsinki, University of Lapland and University of Turku, Finland, receiving positive feedback from students.
