My peer-reviewed book Japanilainen musiikki: Taiko-rumpujen kuminasta J-poppiin (Japanese Music: From the rumble of the taiko drums to J-pop; Helsinki, Gaudeamus) was released in April 2019. It discusses the role of music in Japanese culture and society from the classical period until today. The book also contains original interviews of some of the most influential individuals in modern Japanese music history: Toshi Ichiyanagi (composer), Tadashi Tajima (shakuhachi), Mitsuo Hagita (pop arranger), Tamiya Terashima (film composer), Takako Okamura (singer-songwriter), and Yasunori Nishiki and Rina Yūgi (videogame composers). Further information available here (in Finnish).

As Japanese studies is a relatively small field in Finland, I wish to develop the academic tradition through public lecturing, and academic teaching and supervision. Apart from academic activities, I have also organized several concerts of Japanese music and participated in organizing Finnish-Japanese cultural exchange projects in Japan as well; I also act as the vice chairman of the Finnish-Japanese Society. In addition, I write articles on Japanese culture, society and music for the general public on a regular basis. See my CV, publications, and lecture courses below for details, and feel free to contact me if you share similar research interests!
