Description of research and teaching

Themes: Precambrian geosciences, including geomagnetism, paleomagnetism and supercontinents, field reversals, archeomagnetism, Quaternary palemagnetism, rock magnetism, impact craters and meteorite petrophysics, ultrasonics and environmental magnetism.

Motivation: Reconstructions of continents and their building blocks during the Precambrian are critical in understanding the evolution of planet Earth. They provide also tectonic context for major ore deposits, the tracing of metallogenic belts between blocks, and identifying new prospective regions for mineral deposits of a wide variety of types. They are equally important to understanding the full context of sedimentary basins and their evolution.

Unfortunately, the state of understanding of pre-Pangea reconstructions and their specific paleogeography is tentative at best. There is good evidence, based for instance on the appearance of coeval orogenic belts, that there have been several Precambrian supercontinents such as the Late Archean Kenorland, the late Paleoproterozoic Hudsonland and the Neoproterozoic Rodinia (Pesonen et al. 2012)

Locations: Lake Superior, Arizona, Africa, China, North Europe and India

Specialities: Geomagnetism, paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, petrophysics, continental reconstructions.

Methods: spherical harmonics of the magnetic field; paleo and rock magnetic methods, various modelling techniques.

Instruments: SQUID magnetometer, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), KLY-3 kappabridge, Risto-5 petrophysics workstation (magnetic susceptibility, natural remanent magnetization, porosity and density); Paleomagnetic measurements using alternating field (AF) and thermal demagnetization techniques and rock magnetic (low and high temperature susceptibility and magnetic hysteresis) measurements

Research software and modeling: Tubefind, MAVIS (vector subtraction and great circle analysis of paleomagnetic data), IAPD200 (Fisher statistics, bedding correction and tilt test of paleomagnetic data) and Cureval (handling low and high temperature susceptibility data)

Teaching: Solid  Earth Geophysics, planetary geophysics, geophysics field course, introduction to Geophysics, etc.
