I am Professor of Philosophy (Emerita) at Tampere University and Docent of Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki, where I took my Ph.D degree in 1985. My previous posts include research and teaching positions at the University of Helsinki and at the Academy of Finland. During 2015 – 2016 I worked at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, in its Centre for Advanced Study. I am a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, and of Academia Europaea. I have published on the history of logic, early twentieth century analytic philosophy and phenomenology, epistemology, philosophy of mind and language, philosophy of religion, and pragmatism, and led research projects on the history of modern logic, on twentieth century philosophy, on metaphysics, and on reason and rationality. I am the author of Frege’s Doctrine of Being (Acta Philosophica Fennica, 1985), Johdatus tieteelliseen ajatteluun (with Ilkka Niiniluoto, Gaudeamus, 2016), and Rajan taju: Filosofisia esseitä (Gaudeamus, 2019), and the editor of Mind, Meaning and Mathematics (Kluwer, 1994), The Development of Modern Logic (Oxford, 2009), and Rearticulations of Reason (Acta Philosophica Fennica, 2010). My co-edited works include Frege Synthesized (with Jaakko Hintikka, Reidel, 1986), Analytic Philosophy in Finland (with Ilkka Niiniluoto, Rodopi, 2003), and Categories of Being: Essays on Metaphysics and Logic (with Heikki J. Koskinen, Oxford, 2012). I have published articles in anthologies and journals, for example, in Dialectica, Logical Analysis and History of Philosophy, The Philosophical Quarterly, and Synthese. I have had several administrative duties, such as a membership in the Steering Committee of the European Society for Analytic Philosophy in 2005 – 2011, in the Program Group of Riksbankens Jubileumsfond in 2012 - 2017, and in the Ethics Committee of Tampere Region in 2010 – 2018. I was Chair of the Philosophy and Aesthetics Section in the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2009 - 2014 and a member of the Human Rights Committee of the Finnish Academies in 2008 - 2021.

Description of research and teaching

I have specialized in contemporary philosophy, epistemology, history of modern logic, and metaphilosophy. My present research interests include rationality and emotions, topics in epistemology and ethics, especially epistemology of testimony, theories of judgment and assertion, including suspension of judgment, and early twentieth century philosophy. Since 1977, I have given introductory and advanced courses and held seminars on various themes in the main subfields of theoretical philosophy. I have supervised doctoral theses at the University of Helsinki and at the University of Tampere. I was the leader of the Finnish Doctoral Programme in Philosophy in 2006 - 2015.
