Research interests

Matilda Hellman, DSocSci, is an internationally recognized and awarded social scientist whose work concerns cultural understandings and articulations of addiction, lifestyles, health and social marginalization. Her research has furthered knowledge on the ways in which governance practice and institutions embed and produce views on questions such as drug use, alcohol policy, gambling, brain-based addiction and how it effects individuals, groups and societies. A central conceptual framework has been the welfare state in its many historical shapes and models.

University lecturer, sociology, University of Tampere, 2015-2017

Member, editorial boards of Addiction Research & Theory and Research in Gender Studies.

Media visibility. In June 2017 a study on the Nordic welfare state ethos i Finnish governmantal platforms since the 1950s was the most shared and reported news story from the university. In December 2017 Hellman was interviewed by the BBC World Service regarding Finland’s new alcohol act: Listen to interview at the PRI.org.

Description of research and teaching

I supervise seven doctoral students and lead several research projects.

I teach in the Social Science Masters Program, The English Contemporary Societies Program and in the Masters Program on Research and Leadership in the Social and Health Field
