Description of research and teaching

My research addresses, on the one hand, the ways in which technological, economic and social change is reconfiguring the media, in particular journalism and audience participation. On the other hand, it examines the role the media play in the shaping of the dynamics of the public sphere and public life, especially the moral implications of mediated communication in the domains of crisis, conflict, human rights and humanitarianism. My long-standing research interest has been the mediation of emotions and morality. My current work focuses on the public understanding, practices and experiences of racism and mediation of crisis and conflict in the context of digital communication and social networking technologies.
