Personal profile

Description of research and teaching

I am a university researcher with a multidisciplinary academic background in the humanities and social sciences. Currently, I work at the Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS). In 2026, I will start working at the Centre for Consumer Society Research, University of Helsinki. I also hold a Title of Docent in Political History at the University of Helsinki.

My current research interests focus on the history of occupational medicine and the formation of health citizenship in contemporary society. I am particularly interested in the complex, controversial history of work-related fatigue.

I have previously worked as a doctoral student and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Turku. My monograph dissertation was awarded twice: the Faculty of Humanities award for PhD of the year and the prize for a distinguished dissertation accepted by the University of Turku in the 2015–2016 academic year.

My research has been published in journals such as Theory, Culture and Society, Convergence, International Journal of Cultural Studies, The Sociological Review, Parliamentary AffairsEuropean Journal of Cultural Studies. My article published in the European Journal of Cultural and Political Sociology on the stressors experienced by MPs in the Finnish Parliament received the European Sociological Association Best Article Award in 2021.

I have also published two monographs in Finnish, Ihmiskone töissä. Sotienjälkeinen Suomi tehokkuutta tavoittelemassa [The Human Machine at Work: A Quest for Productivity in Post-War Finland] (Gaudeamus, 2020) and Viestintätoimistojen Valta – Politiikan uudet pelurit [Public Affairs Companies as New Political Players] (with Matti Ylönen and Niina Kari, Vastapaino, 2022). Ihmiskone töissä was nominated in the Science Book of the Year 2020 contest.
