Description of research and teaching

Post-doctoral research project: The relevance of ‘Policey’ law to the emergence of the modern legal system: the
comparative case of the Portuguese colonial administrations of Goa, Macau and Diamond District.

This research intends to observe the importance of colonial institutions to the process of modernization and globalization of law during the early modernity in a comparative field.
To this end, I focus on the transformation of legal regimes and the utilization and changes of the Policey law and ordinances in the administration of places of economic interest to the Portuguese empire, specifically: Goa, Macau, and the Diamond District in Minas Gerais, Brazil.
These different cases provide a picture of the relevance of Policey law in the colonial context. They can show how the concept of ‘police’ and the legal forms attached to it were used as colonial law. The ‘police’ ordinances were an important tool to manage the problems and complexity of the “new life” in a “new world”, with its own legal problems. Moreover, this set of examples makes it visible how the colonial administration inside the Portuguese seaborne empire developed different paths and legal strategies, and why these were diverse or even contradictory.
