 Research interests: Visual representations of wars and crisis, visuality of politics, humanitarianism, vulnerability, migration, refugeeness, international politics, photography, security politics, propaganda, strategic communication, humanity, human rights, animal rights, empathy, global security, media studies


Curriculum vitae

I am a social scientist and a historian interested especially in visual communication, international relations, media studies, global politics and politics of life. I work as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Helsinki faculty of Social Sciences, Political History, in an Academy of Finland project “Multilayered Borders of Global Security”, GLASE (  My research interests include visual representations of conflict, crisis and violence, visual communication in relation to humanitarianism, global mobility, refugeeness as well as terrorism. I am interested in compassion as a political force, (global) hierarchies of valuable life, inclusion and exclusions, humanism, posthumanism, feminism and animal studies. Photography, its history and political utilization fascinate me.
