Description of research and teaching

Professor of Silviculture at the Department of Forest Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland since 1998.

My professional interests are in early silviculture and forest management for production of wood and non-wood services, also including forest certification. I teach courses in themes of forest regeneration, stand dynamics, growth and yield, multipurpose forest management, forest certification, and field courses in silviculture.

I have a Master of Forestry degree from the Helsinki University, MSc in Forestry from the Oregon State University, USA, a PhD from University of Helsinki. Before joining the University of Helsinki, I worked as a researcher and later as a research leader and technical advisor in a silvicultural systems research and development programs at the Research Branch of British Columbia Ministry of Forests, Victoria, Canada, during 1990-1999.

In recent years, I have been Deputy Head of the Department of Forest Sciences (2011-2013) and Head of the Department of Forest Sciences since 2014. An additional research administration position was my service as the director of research at the Finnish Forest Research Institute (METLA, a fixed term position August from 2005 to December 2010).
