Curriculum vitae

I got interested in soil ecology during my master thesis in 2003-2004, in which I studied a decomposition process of genetically modified silver birch leaf litter and effects on saphrophytic soil organisms in a field experiment. I completed my masters degree in 2005 and started in a new project as a PhD student. Allthough I found the ecological research of GMO's very fascinating, I desided to change my focus into another area of modern ecology: urban ecosystem ecology. In my PhD work (supervised by H. Setälä) I'm investigating the linkages between aboveground and belowground biota in disturbed urban soils. I'm especially interested in finding out if plant community manipulation reflects to ecosystem services (i.e. nutrient and carbon retention, decomposition and PAH mineralization) of soils carried out by soil decomposer communities.
