Description of research and teaching

Salla Peltonen (MSc, Gender Studies, Åbo Akademi University) is teaching gender studies as a lecturer at the Swedish School of Social Science at the University of Helsinki. She is a PhD student in Gender Studies at University of Helsinki writing a dissertation on homonationalism and racialization. Focusing on questions of epistemology, language philosophy and ethics, her research interests include critical race, gender and queer studies, theories of sexual difference, post-humanism, human-animal studies, and feminist philosophy. Her work is inspired by Wittgensteinian language and moral philosophy more broadly.

Together with her colleague Katarina Jungar, she has published articles on savior narratives and homonationalist discourses in the Nordic countries, published in * Sexualities* and *NORMA: International Journal of Masculinity Studies*. She has also written about the conceptual politics of gender and sexual difference theory (in Swedish and Finnish). Salla has worked as an editorial secretary of the Nordic Journal of Feminist and Gender research (2007-2010) and is currently member of the editorial board of the * National Journal of Gender Studies* in Finland for which she also is the book review editor. Salla has recently (2017) edited a special issue on feminist epistemic habits and critique together with Marianne Liljeström (University of Turku), for Feminist Encounters: A Journal of Critical Studies in Culture and Politics

Salla has been teaching gender studies courses for over ten years, on topics such as women and globalization, gendered and sexualized violence, feminist science studies, feminist philosophy, feminist classics, feminist theory (undergraduate and advanced levels), gender, embodiment and bodily practices.

Her experience playing and coaching roller derby with the local Roller Derby team, Dirty River Roller Derby, informs her commitment to anti-racist, gender and queer theory and politics.
