Curriculum vitae

Dr Samu Niskanen is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Helsinki. His research is mainly concerned with intellectual life in the Middle Ages and medieval literature, its publication, transmission, and reception. His books include The Letter Collections of Anselm of Canterbury (Brepols, 2011), the collaborative edition Ralph von Battle: Dialoge zur philosophischen Theologie (Herder, 2015), Letters of Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury: The Bec Correspondence (Oxford University Press, 2019), and Publication and the Papacy in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages (Cambridge University Press, 2021).

Niskanen is currently the Principal Investigator of two projects: Medieval Publishing from c. 1000 to 1500, funded by the European Research Council and to end in 2022, and Authorial Publishing in Early Medieval Europe (c. 400–1000), funded by the Academy of Finland and to end in 2023. He manages the Medieval Studies programme, supervises doctoral students, and mentors postdoctoral researchers in the fields of medieval history and medieval Latin literature.
