Curriculum vitae

2012 Docent of comparative literature, University of Helsinki

I am studying the modernist concept of subjectivity from the viewpoint of how the embodied mind is represented in literature through the cooperation of memory and imagination. My main problem is how implicit memory can influence cultural memory and collective value-formation through arts.

My earlier topics in the field are three. In my doctoral thesis on Marguerite Duras's trauma fiction, I studied the aesthetics of postcolonial trauma narratives. I then investigated late Roland Barthes's concept of affective image, and adapted Peircean semiotics to literary emotions. Lastly, I published an extensive Finnish selection of Friederike Mayröcker's experiential poetry with an afterword on her literary career and style (2018).

Besides, in my art exhibitions and performances, I have combined written and spoken lyrics with the voice, instrumental, and dance improvisations of various professional and lay groups.

Ongoing works

The problem of modern subjectivity in the light of the concept of an embodied mind. Examples taken from e. g. Duras, Müller, Sebald, Modiano, Auster, Saramago.

From implicit memory to a revised cultural past (Duras, Müller). For "Cultural Memory" (working title), ed. Suzanne Nalbantian.
