Curriculum vitae

PD Dr. Stefan Schröder works as University Researcher at the University of Helsinki, Finland. He is a historian specialised in premodern cultural and religious history. His research focusses on cultural encounters and embodied experiences, worldviews, cultural memory and uses of the past as well as the production and transmission of knowledge. He has published extensively on medieval travelogues, among them a book about Otherness in pilgrimage reports to the Holy Land (Zwischen Christentum und Islam. Kulturelle Grenzen in den spätmittelalterlichen Pilgerberichten des Felix Fabri (Orbis mediaevalis 11), Berlin: Akademie Verlag 2009). His second book, a slightly revised version of his Habilitation, deals with the cultural transfer between Arabic-Islamic and Latin-Christian cartographical representations (Welt-Wissen und kartografische Repräsentation. Arabisch-islamische und lateinisch-christliche Verflechtungen im Mittelalter (Das Mittelalter – Beihefte 20), Heidelberg: Heidelberg University Publishing 2025 [https://doi.org/10.17885/heiup.1539]). Several related articles tackle cartographical representations from different angles. He is currently co-editing a volume on premodern maps for Brill’s series Reading Medieval Sources (forthcoming 2026). Further publications are devoted to the uses of the crusading past. Presently, he is working at the ERC-project ELBOW focusing on medical electricity and embodied experiences in the long eighteenth century.
