Description of research and teaching

Tiina Paloniitty is lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Helsinki Insitute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS), University of Helsinki, studying EU, national, and comparative environmental law. Dr. Paloniitty is specialised in the science and law interface and has probed the theme in the contexts of water governance and biodiversity law, while also publishing on the methodology of law.

Currently Dr. Paloniitty leads a team of researchers and work package in Circular Economy of Waters in Industrial Processes (CEIWA) consortium, probing the novel water technologies and their regulation, funded by Finnish innovations funder BusinessFinland. She is also a researcher in another Business Finland funded project Bio-CCU, examining the legal landscape of value chains around capturing and utilizing carbon.

Dr. Paloniitty has published with leading international journals and co-edited a special issue for European Energy and Environment Law Review. Dr. Paloniitty's works include a research monograph Law, Ecology and the Management of Complex Systems: The Case of Water Governance (Routledge 2022, Open Access) and co-edited volume EU Environmental Principles and Scientific Uncertainty Before National Courts: the Case of the Habitats Directive (Mariolina Eliantonio, Emma Lees and Tiina Paloniitty (eds) Hart, 2023).

Dr. Paloniitty is a representative of Western Europe in the Governing Board of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. Dr. Paloniitty is also Associate Editor of Environmental Policy and Law and was Co-Editor of Ympäristöjuridiikka (Finnish Environmental Law Review) for 2019-2020. Dr. Paloniitty arranged a pre-colloquium meeting and workshop theme ‘Sustainability Law in and out of Environmental Law’ for the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law community in Helsinki in July 2023.

Dr. Paloniitty currently teaches national environmental law at Faculty of Law's Vaasa unit after having earlier taught global environmental governance at the Faculty's GGL program. Dr. Paloniitty (co-)supervises doctoral researchers in environmental law, comparative environmental law, and animal law.
