Description of research and teaching

Tiina Paloniitty is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Eric Castrén Institute and Helsinki Insitute of Sustainability Science, University of Helsinki, Finland, studying EU and comparative environmental law. Dr. Paloniitty is specialised in the science and law interface and has probed the theme in the contexts of water governance and biodiversity law, whilst also publishing on the methodology of law.

Currently Dr. Paloniitty is a researcher in the 2035Legitimacy project, funded by the Academy of Finland’s Strategic Research Council, examining the role of Aarhus convention in the EU’s climate-relevant decision-making, whilst also leading a work package in Circular Economy of Waters in Industrial Processes (CEIWA) consortium, probing the novel water technologies and their regulation, funded by BusinessFinland.

Dr. Paloniitty has published e.g. with Journal of Environmental Law, Journal of Human Rights and the Environment and co-edited a special issue for European Energy and Environment Law Review. Dr. Paloniitty’s upcoming works include research monograph Law, Ecology and the Management of Complex Systems: The Case of Water Governance (Routledge 2021) and co-edited volume EU Environmental Principles and Scientific Uncertainty Before National Courts: the Case of the Habitats Directive (Eliantonio, Lees and Paloniitty (eds) Hart 2022).

Dr. Paloniitty is a representative of Western Europe in the Governing Board of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. Dr. Paloniitty is also Associate Editor of Environmental Policy and Law and was Co-Editor of Ympäristöjuridiikka (Finnish Environmental Law Review) for 2019-2020. Dr. Paloniitty convened an international seminar ‘Are Climate Impacts Environmental Impacts? Court Review of Complex Scientific Knowledge and Impacts’ in Helsinki in early 2020.

Dr. Paloniitty teaches global environmental governance and national environmental law and supervises doctoral researchers in areas of water and biodiversity governance and circular economy law in EU and in China.
