Curriculum vitae
In my present research I explore the secular and religious grounding of ethical discourse in Indonesia’s Islamic universities. My previous major project was concerned with oil palm estates and the politics of nature in Indonesia’s resource frontiers. I have a broad interest in linguistic phenomena, reflected in my research on storytelling, folk poetry, heritage politics, and minority language revitalization. My ethnographic focus is on Southeast Asia where I did my first field project on ethno-history and social memory in the early 1990s.
