Curriculum vitae

I got my undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of São Paulo (2008) and my Master’s degree in Ecology from the National Institute for Amazonian Research (2012) in Brazil. Currently I am part of the Metapopulation Research Group as a doctoral student under the supervision of Prof. Otso Ovaskainen.

Description of research and teaching

I am interested in large-scale population ecology questions, and in the methodological improvements that make them viable. Limits on the spatial and temporal scope of studies often compromise the usefulness of ecological research. It is difficult to find relevant answers to research problems, not because the problems are irrelevant or poorly formulated, but because the spatial and temporal reach of empirical studies is frequently too small. Large-scale studies can be made more viable through the combination of technological innovation and new modeling approaches to the data.

Currently, my postgraduate studies build both on recent developments in sampling techniques using autonomous audio recorders and on hierarchical Bayesian methods to data analysis to propose a multidisciplinary approach focusing on the influence of land-use change on a tropical bird community in central Amazon in Brazil. The research results will contribute to the development of effective and evidence-based conservation and management activities in that region, which is crucial to the current debate on the effectiveness of the new Brazilian Forest Code.
