Curriculum vitae

Ulla Savolainen is a university researcher at the University of Helsinki. She holds a PhD in Folklore Studies (University of Helsinki, 2015). Her research interests include oral history and memory studies; folklore; narrative theory; vernacular literature; materiality; and experiences of migration, diaspora and transnationality. Currently, she leads a research project titled "Transnational Memory Cultures of Ingrian Finns" (2020–2022). Her previous Academy of Finland post-doctoral project ”Memory Unchained” (2017–2020) analyzed literature related to the experiences of Ingrian Finns. Savolainen's doctoral dissertation (2015) focused on the life writings of former Karelian child evacuees in Finland and the poetics of life writings and reminiscing. She has also researched oral histories of internments of German and Hungarian citizens in Finland in 1944–1946 and analyzed the issue of compensation of past injustice. Savolainen is the chair of the Finnish Oral History Network FOHN.
