Description of research and teaching

I started my biology studies at the University of Helsinki in 2001 and received my master’s degree in September 2007, majoring on morphological and ecological zoology. As an undergraduate student, I spent three years as an exchange student at the University of Kiel, Germany – two years concentrating on marine biology, one year studying mathematics. In Kiel I also did the empirical work for my master’s thesis, "The influence of taxonomic diversity on the resistance to and recovery from hypoxia in a hard-bottom community". I joined the Metapopulation Research Group (http://www.helsinki.fi/science/metapop/) in August 2007 to do a PhD on the dispersal of wood-decaying fungi under the supervision of Otso Ovaskainen.

While the ecology of wood-decaying fungi, especially polypores, is generally well-known, a mechanistic understanding of their air-mediated dispersal process and the primary factors determining it is as yet lacking. As one third of Finland’s polypore and corticioid species are currently threatened or near-threatened, mostly due to intensified and extensified forestry, this gap has to be bridged in order to assess whether the species will be able to persist in the increasingly fragmented patchwork of old-growth forest. In my PhD I attempt to measure and model the dispersal of airborne spores under contrasting wind and canopy conditions and try to identify the species characteristics that are the most decisive for dispersal ability. The aim of my thesis is to find out whether there are differences in the dispersal ability of different species, and whether these differences relate to their patterns of occurrence in nature. My PhD is a part of a larger project on the metacommunity dynamics of wood-decaying fungi (http://www.helsinki.fi/science/metapop/MBG/research/fungi.htm), lead by Otso Ovaskainen.
