Xin Tang's research topics include motivation and engagement, academic wellbeing, social-emotional development, and teaching practices.

Xin Tang is currently on the editorial board of the Learning and Insruction (SSCI-Q1), Journal of Youth and Adolescence (SSCI-Q1), Learning and Individual Differences (SSCI-Q1), Educational Psychology (SSCI-Q2), Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology (SSCI-Q2), and Frontiers in Psychology (SSCI-Q2). He served as the steering group member for the CLIC doctoral program and Changing Education master program.

In general, he is interested in understanding how students are motivated to learn in the school, and how the school environment and teaching practices can help them to reach it.
