Personal profile

Research interests

My doctoral research "Borrowing The “Forest Sound” from Finland: Women and The Transculturation of the Finnish Kantele in Japan" addresses one of the most recent interests in ethnomusicology, namely, the intercultural music flow. This research is based on the ethnomusicological literature on transculturation and globalization.

This study concerns the Japanese reception and transculturation of the kantele, with special attention on women’s adoption and adaptation - a reinterpretation of, and interaction with, and integration of the kantele. The study illustrates the possible reasons for Japanese kantele fascination, as well as the musical manifestation of the kantele’s relocation.

It is my hope to open a new and global perspective to the Finnish national instrument, kantele.
