Project Details
Description (abstract)
The project examines various epistemological and social aspects of the research practice of synthetic biology through theoretical and empirical studies in collaboration with synthetic biology laboratories in Finland and abroad. In particular, the project focuses on the interdisciplinary and basic-science dimensions of synthetic biology. It also studies the relationship of modeling and experimentation, and the public understanding of synthetic biology. The project develops theoretical and practical resources for better understanding the various characteristics of synthetic biology. It also fosters public understanding of synthetic biology by providing a realistic understanding of its potential benefits and risks. One result of the project will be a book on synthetic biology intended for a larger Finnish audience. The project will also promote collaboration between researchers from natural sciences, and social sciences and humanities.
