Description

The aim of the project is to determine the long-term effects of music-based rehabilitation on motor, cognitive, emotional, and social recovery after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying the rehabilitative effects music in TBI patients. In a cross-over randomized controlled trial (RCT), 60 patients with moderate-severe TBI will receive a music intervention involving cognitive-motor training with drums and creative musical expression (music playing, song writing) or standard rehabilitation. The progression of the recovery is repeatedly assessed using neuropsychological and motor tests, questionnaires, and modern structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI/fMRI) methods, including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and voxel-based morphometry (VBM).

The project is a joint collaborative effort between the Cognitive Brain Research Unit (CBRU), Institute of Behavioural Sciences, University of Helsinki; Department of Music, University of Jyväskylä; Validia Rehabilitation Helsinki, Finnish Association of People with Physical Disabilities; Department of Neurology, Helsinki University Central Hospital (HUCH); HUS Helsinki Medical Imaging Centre; and Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, University of Barcelona. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland, University of Helsinki, Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela), and Yrjö Jahnsson Foundation
