Description

The project aims at creating a general basis for understanding the processes and mechanisms of ethnic interaction and adaptation between contacting populations of heterogeneous linguistic, cultural, and physical origins, with the focus on the Amdo Qinghai region in the Sino-Tibetan border zone. The project brings together specialists of several different disciplines, including linguistics, anthropology and ethnology, comparative religion, and development studies. The participants comprise both MA students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars. Apart from the members associated with the University of Helsinki, the project has a large network of contacts in various other countries. The project has received external financial support from the Academy of Finland and the Finnish Society of Sciences and Lettres (Finska Vetenskaps-Societeten).
