Knowledge Through the Iron Curtain - Transferring Knowledge and Technology in Cold War Europe

Description

The research project will provide a new perspective on the history of the Cold War in two ways. Firstly, we will study East-West connections “behind the scenes” in Europe from the point of view of knowledge and technology transfer. Secondly, in this field, we will study the role of “smaller” European countries that were located near the Iron Curtain on either the Eastern, or the Western side of it. The main hypothesis of the project is that in spite of the bipolarity of the Cold war and the rhetoric about the impenetrability of the Iron Curtain, the transfer of knowledge between East and West continued – to a certain extent the old existing forms of cooperation were maintained but also new contacts were established.
