The LIVE Project aimed to carry out R & D on educational applications of modern information and communication technologies (MICT), open and distance learning (ODL) techniques and virtual pedagogy.

The LIVE project was organized to do research in the use of mobile telecommunications in an open and flexi-mode virtual school environment. It was connected to the distance education network which included the Helsinki Second Teacher Training School and two rural schools: Kilpisjärvi School, located in Lapland, 1,200 km north of Helsinki, and Ruskela Primary School in the municipality of Tuusula, about 60 kms north of Helsinki.

The telecommunication technologies used in the LIVE project consisted of mobile integrated GSM communicators and an ISDN-based videoconferencing system. The project was supported by the Finnish telecommunications companies Nokia, Xenex and Sonera Finland.
