Description (abstract)
The Nordic countries are often cited as pioneers in gender equality, yet the Nordic news media remain dominated by stories about men that are produced by male journalists. The fifth edition of the study Global Media Monitoring Project GMMP (which measures gender representation in the news) was presented in 2015, and the results for the Nordic countries are not encouraging.
In fact, the study shows that the proportion of women in the media seems to have stagnated or even declined. Now a network of Nordic journalism and gender researchers, all of whom are involved in the national GMMP 2015 reports, are going to look closer at the state of gender equality in the Nordic news media. The Nordic Council of Ministers is supporting the development of a joint Nordic report on the topic and will co-host a conference on gender equality in Nordic media in Copenhagen in spring 2016 together with KVINFO.
