Description (abstract)
The project investigates the dominating discourses on the North and South dichotomy in modern and contemporary European history, but with a special emphasis on the Nordic region. The project is theoretically rooted in the traditions of imagology, comparative literature studies, history of ideas and cultural studies/ history. The project coordinator PhD Peter Stadius is currently working on a monograph with the work title: North and South as Mental Geography in 19th Century Europe. The book project is a collection of biographical studies on prominent 19th century European cultural personalities, with the perspective of how north-south dichotomies appear in their respective literary work and biographical documentation. The persons object for the study are: Georges Sand, Carl-Victor Bonstetten, Hans Christian Andersen, Zacharias Topelius, Emilia Pardo Bazán, Camilla Collett, Ellen Key, Angel Ganivet and Maria Montessori.
