Northern Neighbours

Project Details

Description (abstract)

Our research project "Northern Neighbours" looks at the literatures of the Russian Arctic area in the context of 20th century modernization processes, such as colonization, technologization and urbanization. The material we analyze includes both indigenous literatures and Russian literature written in Barents and Yamalo-Nenets areas.

Our starting point is the idea of neighbourhood, both in terms of different Arctic communities and in terms of human and non-human relations. We propose that the literatures of the Russian Arctic area have not developed in isolation but in interaction between indigenous and ethnically Russian communities. In a similar manner, we see that the literary representations of human and non-human relations should be approached in terms of mutual dependency.

The project is funded by Kone Foundation (2019-22).
