    Project Details

    Description (abstract)

The R2L-HOT project is funded by Nordplus Horizontal. The project will adapt and develop previous work done in Reading to Learn to new cultural, linguistic and educational contexts: the Helsinki region (Finland), the municipality of Ovanåker (Sweden) and the Tallinn area (Estonia). The project will draw on the latest developments in Reading to Learn as a lifelong process.
The educational basis of the project is research on "scaffolding", which gives students an active role in their own learning process and the skills necessary for lifelong learning. The linguistic basis of the project is functional grammar and genre analysis, which provides teachers and students with the concepts and tools needed for discovering how meanings are made in different genres in different contexts. The students at the focus of the project are disadvantaged learners and those for whom the national language is not their first language.
The project is based on (a) Reading to Learn workshops for teachers and teacher-educators, (b) implementation and testing of Reading to Learn in schools in each country and (c) the setting up of a Nordic-Baltic network of teachers and teacher-educators to provide peer support, share experiences and discuss and disseminate the results of the project.
