Description (abstract)

MOBILISING FOR MOBILE ROMA:

Solidarity activism in Helsinki in the 2000s-2010s

(Ed. Adjunct professor Aino Saarinen)

focuses on civil society i.e. established institutions and forums, radical groups, and self-organised individuals which are promoting solidarity and welfare in the name of shared identities and universal human rights in Helsinki, Finland. Special attention is directed to methodological issues regarding the research for/with/by Roma.

The first part of the Roma Trilogy in the making, Huomio! Romaneja tiellä [Attention! Roma on the road, Like 2012], analysed the arrival of ‘beggars’ from Eastern Europe. This second volume makes visible ‘acts of citizenship’ and ‘acts of friendship’ that oppose populist hate against Roma and campaign for social, cultural, and political justice. The third, in progress, will give space to the narratives of the migrants themselves.
